Sugarcane Fields Under Fire: A Call to Action Against Arson

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has condemned the recent increase in intentional fires set in sugarcane fields, labeling these acts as both reckless and criminal. CEO Vinesh Kumar emphasized the severe consequences these incidents have on not only farmers but the entire sugarcane industry.

“Setting fire to sugarcane fields deliberately is not just careless; it is a criminal act with serious repercussions,” Kumar stated. He noted that the SRIF has suffered significant losses in vital research data as a result of these fires.

According to Kumar, a single instance of arson can destroy valuable research in mere moments, undoing important advancements and jeopardizing the future of the sector. He pointed out that such actions threaten the economic stability of farmers and undermine the scientific research necessary for the industry’s sustainable growth. Those who engage in these illegal activities will face strict penalties.

Kumar urged the community to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, uphold the integrity of ongoing research, and ensure the ongoing success of our sugarcane industry.”
