Yesterday, the Government granted support to 88 sugarcane farmers from the West, with the assistance of Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar. The event took place in Ba, marking a significant step towards enhancing productivity and providing essential resources to local farmers.
The grants include the New Farmers/Lease Premium Grant and the Farm Mechanisation Grant. Since the program’s inception, it has already assisted 223 farmers in securing and accessing land necessary for sugarcane farming. Mr. Singh highlighted that the latest support comprises 52 farmers in the Rarawai to Penang Mill area, 13 in Lautoka, and 23 from the Nadi to Sigatoka corridor. The initiative not only aids new entrants into the industry but also helps existing farmers secure their land tenure, crucial for the growth and sustainability of the sugar sector.
The Minister emphasized that the government prioritizes addressing land lease challenges for the long-term viability of the sugar industry. He stated their commitment to tackling issues regarding labor shortages and high production costs through farm mechanisation, which is essential for boosting productivity.
As part of the mechanisation efforts, the distribution of 12 sugarcane planters and 16 fertiliser applicators to tractor service providers across the sector is underway. The Farm Mechanisation Grant is designed to help these providers affordably access 50% subsidies on these machines. In turn, they will be expected to offer subsidised services to farmers, especially in cane planting and fertiliser application. This collaboration ensures that modern farming techniques remain accessible to all farmers, regardless of their financial capacities.
Mr. Singh reiterated the importance of this mechanisation program in modernizing Fiji’s sugar industry, aimed at reducing production costs and increasing yields. He underscored that the future of the sugar industry relies on adaptability and innovation.
This initiative is a promising development for the sugarcane sector, as it not only addresses immediate needs but also creates a foundation for future growth and sustainability in agriculture.
