Sugarcane Boost: Farmers in Northern Division Celebrate Government Support!

The Ministry of Sugar Industry is taking steps to improve sugarcane productivity and support farmers in the Northern Division by aiding 22 farmers in Labasa and 36 in Seaqaqa through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program. Eligible farmers can receive financial assistance covering 30 percent of their lease renewal costs, up to a maximum of $7,500.

During a recent event where grant agreements were handed over, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh emphasized that the program intends to alleviate financial pressures on farmers and motivate both new and existing farmers to increase sugarcane production. He highlighted the significance of the sugar industry as the largest sector in the northern division, which is in need of revitalization.

The minister noted that the government introduced this support program in response to farmers’ concerns regarding excessive premiums for lease renewals. Additionally, two farmers from Seaqaqa received assistance through the Farm Mechanization Grant for a Cane Planter and Fertilizer Applicator.

The Ministry plans to extend similar support to sugarcane farmers in the western division. To date, 177 sugarcane farmers across the northern and western divisions have benefited from this initiative.

Seaqaqa farmer Mohammed Janab expressed gratitude towards the government’s efforts, stating that the financial assistance has greatly relieved his family’s burden, as the government has covered $5,000 of his $15,000 lease renewal premium.
