Sugarcane Arson: A Threat to Fiji’s Future

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the alarming rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both dangerous and illegal.

Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, emphasized the significant harm these fires inflict on farmers and the wider sugarcane industry. He pointed out that the act of deliberately igniting sugarcane fields is a criminal offense that comes with serious penalties.

“These fires are not merely irresponsible; they are criminal actions that have severe consequences,” Dr. Kumar stated. He noted that SRIF has faced considerable losses of important research data due to these fires.

This data, often collected over many months or even years, is crucial for implementing evidence-based improvements in the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single arson incident could erase valuable research efforts in a moment, hindering progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future.

He called on the public to recognize the seriousness of the situation, adding that arson not only threatens farmers’ economic stability but also endangers essential scientific research necessary for the industry’s sustainability and development.

The SRIF has urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

“By collaborating, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, protect vital research, and ensure the ongoing success of our industry,” he concluded.
