The sugar tonnage has not increased this year, according to Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh. Speaking to canefarmers in the Bucaisau sector, he expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind the stagnant tonnage.
Mr. Singh mentioned he was unsure if the weather played a role in the situation. “I am not sure,” he said. “We need to investigate where we are failing and identify the issues. We will have to wait and see after the sugar production.”
He highlighted that the Labasa mill was performing better compared to the two mills in the West. “I observed this firsthand during my recent visit to Ba with the Prime Minister,” he added.
Mr. Singh emphasized that the industry’s problems could not be resolved overnight.
