The Sugar Festival committee must ensure that all temporary structures and amusement rides undergo inspections and receive certification from the Labour Ministry to comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations prior to the start of operations.
Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Anees Khan stated that the committee is obligated to have these inspections conducted. He emphasized the necessity of having an evacuation plan in place for emergencies.
Khan mentioned that the council intends to raise awareness among food stall operators through the distribution of circulars. The health team will oversee the food stalls to ensure adherence to food safety, hygiene, and environmental cleanliness standards.
Organizers are expected to provide information about the number of food stalls set to operate. Sufficient litter bins will be placed, and organizers must hire a cleaning contractor to keep the carnival grounds tidy.
Additionally, the council’s City Rangers will collaborate with the police and LTA to facilitate smooth traffic flow in and out of the city during the event, while ensuring pedestrian safety.
The Vodafone Sugar Festival is set to commence this Saturday at the Carnival Grounds in Lautoka.
