Students Under Siege: Suva’s Drug Crisis Unveiled

Spread the love

Concerns are rising over drug dealers targeting students in the greater Suva area, particularly those under the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme who receive allowances. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu confirmed that arrests were made last week close to the University of the South Pacific (USP) Laucala campus in Suva, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The shift in strategies among drug dealers reflects an alarming trend. They are becoming more innovative and are targeting students who possess disposable income. The police have initiated random searches of suspicious groups, particularly in the Southern Division, to deter drug-related activities. Driu noted that if individuals are found behaving suspiciously, they are stopped, searched, and instructed to leave the area, especially when students are present.

Maintaining a safe environment for students is crucial and requires collaboration among law enforcement, educational institutions, and the broader community. Schools must establish support systems to help students access counseling and resources to resist drug temptations, particularly as they experience newfound financial independence.

Community awareness campaigns are also essential for educating students and parents about the risks of drug use and the methods employed by dealers. Encouraging open dialogue regarding drug-related challenges is vital for creating a supportive environment. This approach empowers students to seek help if they feel threatened or targeted, fostering healthier choices and reducing the allure of drugs.

The targeting of students by drug dealers in Suva necessitates urgent action. Through joint efforts among law enforcement, educational institutions, and the community, a safer environment for young people can be established. Investing in prevention, education, and support services will help protect students and allow them to thrive free from the dangers of drug abuse. Collectively, we can stand against this troubling trend and work towards a brighter future for all.
