Students Stand Apart: USP Student Association Addresses Strike Concerns

The University of the South Pacific Students Association (USPSA) has clarified that it is independent from the groups organizing the current strike involving two staff unions at the Laucala campus. President Christopher Siliva expressed concern over misinformation that has led some members to consider participating in the strike due to misleading claims, which have skewed perceptions of the situation.

Siliva noted that while some members may individually support the strike, the student body as a whole will not take a stance. He also highlighted their apprehension regarding the demands made by the Fiji-based staff unions, which include calls for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor and President. He pointed out that these demands may not comply with the legal framework governing the Vice-Chancellor’s conduct at USP, potentially undermining the rule of law and jeopardizing the interests of all staff union members.

“It is crucial for all parties to adhere to established legal frameworks at USP to ensure fair and equitable outcomes,” Siliva stated. He acknowledged the important role of all staff but emphasized that the strike could disrupt classes, delay academic progress, and impede access to vital services students depend on, especially with final exams approaching.

“We encourage open dialogue, respect for diverse opinions, and a continued commitment to our educational goals,” he added.
