Students’ Scholarship Shocker: Are Full-Time Jobs Putting Aid at Risk?

Students enrolled in the Tertiary Scholarships and Loan Scheme (TSLS) who are working full-time are in violation of their bonding agreement, according to TSLS CEO Hasmukh Lal.

Mr. Lal stated that the scheme only permits students to engage in part-time work, limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week, while they are fulfilling their academic commitments.

“Students under the TSLS scheme who are employed full-time are breaching their agreement,” Mr. Lal emphasized. “The terms of the bonding agreement clearly state that scholarship recipients are not allowed to take on any employment unless permitted by the scheme.”

He explained that the only exception allows students to work part-time, providing them with industry experience while contributing to workforce growth.

“Those who work full-time while studying full-time have violated the scholarship agreement, which will result in immediate termination of the scholarship,” he added.

Mr. Lal noted that there have been no reported cases of such agreement breaches and that the organization would become aware of any issues only if the public raises concerns.

“Should students need to work part-time, they must seek our approval, which we are willing to grant. However, if a student is found to be working full-time while also studying full-time, we will conduct an investigation and take necessary actions based on the agreement, triggered by a whistleblower complaint,” he mentioned. “Currently, we have not received any complaints from the public.”
