Thirteen individuals, including three students, were arrested yesterday for possessing illicit drugs. The incidents took place across two different school campuses, prompting a thorough investigation by authorities. Police Assistant Commissioner Livai Driu commended the staff for alerting law enforcement after the discovery of smoking paraphernalia in a dining hall, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in maintaining safety within schools.

In addition to the students, a 33-year-old carpenter and a 47-year-old security guard were apprehended at the Nadonumai Roadblock with small plastic bags containing white crystals. Meanwhile, a police raid in Waiyavi, Lautoka, led to the arrest of four individuals found in possession of white crystals, smoking equipment, and cash suspected to be drug-related.

Other arrests included a 32-year-old mechanic caught with six bags of white crystals, a 29-year-old from Sigatoka seized with seven branches of a suspected marijuana plant at a bus shelter, and a 46-year-old farmer who was found with 161 marijuana branches and cash at the Nadi Bus Stand. Additionally, a 24-year-old man was taken into custody after being discovered with eight sachets of dried marijuana leaves at the Ba Market.

All suspects are currently in police custody, with a comprehensive investigation underway and all seized substances awaiting analysis.

This situation highlights ongoing challenges regarding drug use, particularly among youth. While these incidents are troubling, they also illustrate the proactive measures being taken by school officials and law enforcement to address the issue and safeguard the community. Collaborative efforts can lead to positive changes in the environment and provide support systems for students in need of assistance.
