Adran Kumar is thankful he heeded his mother’s advice to participate in the New Zealand-Fiji Secondary School Essay Competition 2024. The 17-year-old Year 12 student from Sabeto College in Nadi emerged as the supreme winner of the 16th edition of the competition.
Kumar was among two students from the Western Division recognized for delivering the best essay. Reflecting on the process, he revealed that he almost abandoned the task partway through, feeling overwhelmed by the talent of other students. “I told my parents that I couldn’t do it,” he said. “I doubted my ability compared to other students across the country who write better than me. I thought it would be pointless to put in my best effort if it wasn’t going to be successful.”
However, his mother’s constant encouragement motivated him to persevere and finish his essay. “I am grateful I listened to my mother,” he remarked.
The competition saw participation from over 100 secondary schools, with a total of 600 essays submitted. The theme revolved around the Pacific Way, emphasizing the unique approaches of the Pacific region.
Kumar expressed his gratitude to his teachers for their support in achieving this success. He focused his essay on eco-tourism and the importance of preserving the vanua, noting, “Whatever I thought, I put down in writing. The significance of eco-tourism lies in showcasing our identity to the Pacific and the world. It helps preserve Fijian culture, traditions, and land.”
With aspirations of studying medicine, Kumar was awarded $500 in cash, a laptop, and a certificate of recognition. One of the judges, Dr. Satendra Singh, praised the high caliber of writing seen in the competition, stating, “A good essay or article does not only attract but touches the hearts of the readers.”
Alex Shahryar-Davies, Deputy High Commissioner of the New Zealand High Commission, expressed pride in sponsoring the essay competition for 16 consecutive years. He highlighted the opportunity it provides students in Fiji to enhance their thinking and writing skills while engaging in a beneficial and informative activity.
Certificates of recognition were also awarded to Shresti Devi (Year 11), Kristina Kavita (Year 13), Shakshi Chand (Year 13), and Nitish Chand (Year 13).
