Vilikesa Bari, a 21-year-old marine engineering student at the Fiji Maritime Academy, is pursuing justice after allegedly being assaulted by a police officer in Nausori on Saturday night. Currently recovering at Wainibokasi Hospital, Bari sustained significant injuries from the incident, including a broken jaw that necessitated surgery.
Just after completing his exams, Bari was preparing for a mandatory six-month seagoing service, which he has now been informed may be postponed. Expressing his hope for justice, he stated, “Right now, I trust the law will provide justice to ensure that it won’t happen to anyone else.” This incident occurred when Bari and his brother were waiting for transportation home after a family gathering.
Bari recounted how he attempted to alert an officer to a fight that had broken out nearby. Instead of receiving assistance, he was allegedly pulled aside by the officer, who struck him with a flashlight and continued to beat him after he was taken to the police reporting area. Another officer eventually intervened, and Bari requested assistance to go to the hospital.
He mentioned that the officer who attacked him visited him afterward, saying he was under stress and pressure, but Bari was firm in asserting that his personal struggles should not have led to the assault. His mother, Unaisi Qionimacawa, expressed her shock and relief that her son survived the ordeal, stating her support for his pursuit of justice.
In response to the allegations, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has initiated an investigation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law by officers and assuring the community of a thorough inquiry into the matter.
This incident highlights critical issues surrounding police conduct and the urgent need for accountability. It is a reminder that, while the actions of individuals can lead to distressing situations, there is a framework of law in place designed to address grievances and promote justice. Bari’s resolve to seek justice not only reflects his strength but also symbolizes hope for others who may find themselves in similar situations, reinforcing the belief that support and advocacy can foster positive change.
