Struggles Unveiled: Unforeseen Triumphs of Mine Workers

Tears of Joy

The long struggle of the mine workers has finally come to an end, marking a historic moment. Their 33-year battle was filled with tears and pain, but now it has turned into joy. While some may see this as insignificant, their stories of success need to be shared with future generations to highlight the challenges they faced and how the Coalition Government fulfilled the promises of previous administrations. During an address to the Vatukoula Gold Mines striking workers and their families at the Ba Civic Centre, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka assured them that their three-decade-long struggles and challenges have come to a close. Gratitude is due to PM Rabuka and his Government for addressing their needs. Rajnesh Ishwar Lingam, Balgovind Rd, Nadawa, Nasinu.

Acting Appointments

I am perplexed by the Attorney-General’s statement regarding the Police Commissioner’s position, which can only be vacated by a tribunal finding of misbehavior. It has been understood for ages that all acting appointments in public service have an expiration date since they are temporary. Is this not the case for the Police Commissioner? Will the same apply to the acting DPP? Perhaps we need a Supreme Court opinion on this matter. Selwa Nandan, Lautoka.

World Youth Skills Day

In December 2014, the UN General Assembly established World Youth Skills Day to emphasize the importance of equipping young people with essential skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship, addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development. World Youth Skills Day events have since provided a unique forum for dialogue among young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, employers, policymakers, and development partners. As we approach 2024, it’s a significant milestone to reflect on the progress and ongoing challenges in youth skills development. Bridging the gap between education and employment and adapting to technological advancements are crucial for economic growth. A collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including employers, government, and professionals, is necessary to tackle the skilling challenge. Let’s celebrate this day with a positive vibe. What’s with ‘Eh’

Nishant Singh’s comments on the frequent use of “Eh” in everyday conversations have struck a chord with me. The use of “Eh” as an interrogative can be quite irritating. Recently, the morning announcer on Bula FM drove me to switch to Fiji 1 radio for better music and grammar, albeit unsuccessfully. Even during sermons, the constant use of this term keeps me alert. Terry Hulme, Russell St, Eastwood, NSW, Australia.

Bastille Day

As we celebrate France’s liberation on Bastille Day, it is important to remember that the Karnaky people in New Caledonia are still awaiting their liberation from French colonialism in the Pacific. The recent march in Suva reminds us of their struggle. Rajend Naidu, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Tough Test for Fiji

After watching the All Blacks defeat England 24-17 and maintain their unbeaten run, I urge the Fiji Water Flying Fijians to prepare rigorously for their upcoming Test in San Diego. Despite being a Tier Two nation, Fiji faces a formidable opponent in the All Blacks, who will show no mercy. It’s a David versus Goliath battle, and the Flying Fijians must step up to prove themselves. Congratulations to the All Blacks for their series win over England, and kudos to Ireland and the Wallabies for their respective victories. In local sports, Marist and Grammar fell short to Nasinu Secondary and MGM in the U18 category. However, it’s disappointing that journalists were initially barred from Buckhurst Park, with “No media allowed.” Living in a technology-driven world, we must embrace transparency in sports. Rajnesh Ishwar Lingam, Balgovind Rd, Nadawa, Nasinu.

Drug Problem

Fiji is grappling with a significant drug problem, with much of it still hidden beneath the surface. Fiji has become a major drug transfer hub in the Pacific, infiltrated by Asian and Latin American cartels due to lax security. Corruption within Fijian security services exacerbates the issue, affecting even school children who are exploited as carriers. The introduction of the National Counter Narcotics Strategy 2023-2028 is a sigh of relief, promising a coordinated effort to tackle the drug menace. All relevant ministries and stakeholders must work together to ensure success. A firm law enforcement approach is essential, along with necessary financial support from the government, to rid Fiji of this drug stigma and restore its status as a paradise. Dewan Chand, Namadi Heights, Suva.

Beers for Minister

A minister was seen at a prominent club in Lautoka beside the courthouse, enjoying drinks while his driver waited in the car park at night. Is this ethically acceptable behavior for a minister? Clarification is needed. Geoffrey Chand, Lautoka.

Big Wedding

A billionaire heir recently got married in India, with a wedding costing $1332 million attended by many big-name celebrities. Truly, big money speaks volumes. Rajend Naidu, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Sad Reality

History from 2006 to 2022 must not be allowed to repeat itself. Although some may end up imprisoned, it’s crucial to handle matters correctly. Dan Urai, Lautoka.
