Saten Lal, a 55-year-old resident of Colasi, Rakiraki, relocated to Suva in 2000 in pursuit of better job opportunities to secure a brighter future for his family. As he reflects on his journey while waiting for potential clients in the heat, he credits his wife for being a steadfast support throughout his life.

Lal grew up working on a farm alongside his six siblings, helping their father cultivate dalo and various root crops. He fondly remembers those days as some of the happiest of his life, filled with joy and less financial pressure. With an early passion for driving, Lal eagerly embraced the suggestion to move to Suva and started his career as a truck driver at Ashabhai & Company Ltd. Eventually, he owned his own carrier and began operating from the Suva Carrier Stand in 2010.

Currently, he faces challenges as business has been slow, particularly during what is typically the peak season. He observes that many people are struggling financially, which is reflected in his own experience of returning home without any earnings on certain days. However, Lal remains optimistic, acknowledging that he is fortunate compared to many others. He expresses gratitude for the support of his wife and children, which has allowed his family to live in their own home without the burden of rent—a significant relief during challenging times.

Lal recounts that the Covid-19 lockdown was particularly tough for his family, but thanks to their savings, they managed to navigate through it. He emphasizes the importance of being content with what one has rather than longing for unattainable things. He also notes the rising cost of living compared to his childhood in Rakiraki, highlighting the difficulties many face in dealing with increased prices for goods and services.

Reflecting on the city he cherishes, Lal expresses sadness over the deteriorating conditions of Suva City, particularly regarding waste disposal and potholes around the bus stand. He hopes that the government will address these issues to improve the city’s state.

In summary, Lal’s story is one of perseverance, gratitude, and community spirit. Despite the economic challenges and changing urban landscape, his positive outlook on life and emphasis on family support shine through. This narrative illustrates the resilience of individuals and families facing hardship, and their capacity for hope amid adversity—a reminder that with support and a positive mindset, it is possible to navigate life’s difficulties effectively.
