The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition is not just about sports participation, as emphasized by Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Kalouniwai accepted a challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, highlighting the responsibilities of both forces in fostering a better Fiji.

Kalouniwai remarked, “It’s more than about winning or losing; it’s about the spirit we share in the forces, our identity, our values, and our contributions to the future of this country.” He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been on a reconciliation journey, aiming to redefine its path forward.

He also pointed out the challenges the Fiji Police Force faces due to the drug crisis affecting communities and expressed hope that they would uphold high moral standards in their duties while embodying the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl.

Commissioner Chew proclaimed that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl, expressing anticipation for the Fiji Police Force’s defense of the trophy. “As career police officers, we are trained to be cautious, and we cannot help but question what strategies may be at play,” he noted. The police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl title last year after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

With the growing social issues in communities, Chew advocated for a stance against drugs, stating, “Since the new Ratu Sukuna tanoa was revealed to the world in 2022, it has had one home, Nasova, and this year it will return there.”

Salman Khan, chief commercial officer of Vodafone Fiji, highlighted the country’s passion for rugby, stating that the event showcases disciplined forces competing not merely for victory but for a trophy symbolizing camaraderie and spirited rivalry. He encouraged players to compete with integrity, pride, and respect for the legacy of past champions and the aspirations of future generations.

The tentative date for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is set for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with other sporting events scheduled for the same week.
