Felix Magnus, the Executive Chairman of the Nasinu Town Council, has urged the Fijian Government to intensify efforts against illegal dumping, a growing concern that negatively impacts both local councils and the environment in Fiji. He highlighted the importance of amending the Litter Act, arguing that the existing fines fail to deter offenders.
Magnus explained that illegal dumping poses a significant challenge in Nasinu and throughout Fiji. He noted that some violators prefer to pay the minimal $40 fine rather than cover the expense of hiring a truck to dispose of waste at the Naboro Landfill. This practice not only leads to environmental degradation but also strains council resources, which are then diverted from providing essential services to responsible citizens.
He pointed out that the rising costs associated with illegal dumping detract from the council’s ability to serve its community effectively. Magnus argued that current penalties do not adequately reflect the harm caused by illegal dumping and are insufficient to discourage repeat offenses. He suggested that higher fines are necessary to promote responsible behavior and protect the environment. He emphasized, “If we want a clean environment and safe waterways, the fines need to be high enough to prevent this behavior. A $40 fine is not enough.”
Additionally, Magnus addressed the issue of informal settlements that do not pay for garbage collection services. He stated that these areas impose significant demands on council resources while leaving responsible ratepayers to shoulder the financial burden. He believes it is essential for all residents, including those in informal settlements, to contribute to waste management costs, ensuring fairness for everyone in the community.
In conclusion, addressing illegal dumping in Fiji not only requires stronger penalties but also a more equitable system for garbage collection contributions. By raising awareness and reforming current laws, Fiji can move towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all its citizens.
