Investigations are nearing completion for five recent fires, one of which damaged a vacant house at Eco Trax.

Puamau Sowane, Chief Executive Officer of Fiji’s National Fire Authority, has issued a statement on these residential fires, emphasizing the critical need for fire safety.

Several fire incidents were reported across various locations in Fiji between 9-10 July.

On 9 July, a fire at Gaji Road in Samabula, Suva, occurred mid-morning, affecting a household of six adults and two children. Details on the damage and cause are still pending.

Later that evening in Burenitu Village, Nalawa, Ra, another fire caused significant damage to a residence, impacting four individuals with estimated damages totaling $25,000.

The next day, incidents in Burelevu Village, Saivou, Ra, and at Uciwai Sangam School in Nadi resulted in complete destruction. The damages are estimated at $30,000 and $50,000, affecting five and six people respectively.

Mr. Sowane encourages homeowners to secure their properties and cited common causes like candles and electrical faults.

“Over the years, electrical wires’ insulation can degrade due to aging. The insulation’s capability decreases over time, with most designs having a life expectancy of between 20 to 30 years.”

He advised regular electrical inspections and urged prompt reporting of emergencies to NFA’s toll-free line at 910.
