Strict New Rules for Importing Tabua in Fiji

Beginning in January, the iTaukei Affairs Ministry, in partnership with the Environment Ministry, has instituted new regulations mandating approval for the import and export of ‘tabua’—the whale’s tooth, which holds significant cultural value for the iTaukei people in Fiji. This decision reflects a commitment to stronger enforcement surrounding these traditional items.

Importantly, individuals should be aware that importing or exporting a tabua to the United States is strictly prohibited. While there are no specific quotas for tabua imports, the monthly export limit is set at 16 tabuas, and compliance with local laws, including obtaining import permissions from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and necessary permits from the destination country, is essential.

To streamline the process, approval letters and permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, those wishing to take a tabua abroad are encouraged to make arrangements well in advance, as last-minute requests may conflict with the established quota.

Furthermore, adherence to the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES Act) and the Customs Regulation framework is crucial for ensuring continued compliance with both national and international conservation efforts.

This initiative is a positive step towards the sustainable management of culturally significant items, highlighting the importance of preserving Fiji’s heritage while respecting global environmental standards.

In summary, the new regulations governing the tabua’s import and export represent a balanced approach to cherishing cultural heritage and promoting conservation, thereby fostering greater awareness and appreciation for Fiji’s unique traditions.
