The Acting Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Social Protection, Salanieta Daunabuna, emphasized the crucial role of parental responsibility in preventing child abuse and neglect during a recent event marking the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse (PCAN) in Suva. The observance began with a march through the city, focusing on raising awareness around the issue.
Daunabuna articulated that parental responsibility involves creating a safe environment for children, meeting their basic needs, and shielding them from all forms of harm, including abuse. She noted that violence against children has far-reaching consequences, not just for individuals but also for society, as it burdens the global economy.
Statistics from the National Child Welfare Act highlighted the gravity of the situation, reporting 1,477 cases of child abuse in the previous year. Alarmingly, more than half of the child victims were girls, with a significant percentage suffering from neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, primarily among those under the age of 12. The data further revealed that a large majority of the perpetrators were known to the victims, with many being immediate family members.
Symbolically, Daunabuna linked the frangipani flower to child protection, suggesting it represents the nurturing nature required for children to thrive. The roots of the flower symbolize the collective strength of families and communities, essential for fostering an environment of growth, trust, and respect.
Looking ahead, she announced that the theme for 2024 is “Every child is one caring adult away from being a success story. It starts with us.” This theme reinforces the importance of creating a loving and supportive backdrop for children to flourish. To promote this, Daunabuna proposed the CHILD acronym, which encourages Communication, Helping with aspirations, Investing in their future, Loving, and Dedicating time to children.
This event serves as a hopeful reminder of the community’s role in child protection and the profound impact that dedicated and caring adults can have on a child’s development and future success. By actively engaging with children and prioritizing their well-being, society can work toward reducing the rates of abuse and fostering a healthier environment for future generations.
In summary, the emphasis on accountability and active involvement from families and communities presents a positive path toward safeguarding children’s futures.
