Strengthening Laws to Curb Alcohol-Fueled Violence: What’s Next?

Attorney-General Graham Leung has emphasized the necessity of fully enforcing existing laws to prevent further incidents of public disorder. During his remarks, he highlighted the importance of proactive law enforcement, particularly by police, to manage and mitigate these types of disturbances effectively.

Leung pointed out the notable absence of prosecutions under the Liquor Act, suggesting that it has been a significant amount of time since such legal action has been taken. He indicated that there may be a need to reconsider the penalties imposed on licensees who violate these laws in order to ensure greater accountability for their actions.

He believes that education about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse is vital for addressing the root causes of alcohol-fueled disturbances. The Attorney-General called for collaboration between various segments of the community, including non-governmental organizations, religious groups, and governmental agencies, to tackle these issues comprehensively.

The recent Liquor (Amendment) Act 2023 has adjusted the permitted hours for the sale and supply of alcohol and includes provisions aimed at preventing acts of violence. Leung underscored that when laws are fully enforced, they can serve as a crucial instrument in reducing alcohol-related violence and crime.

This commitment to law enforcement and community education offers a hopeful outlook for addressing alcohol-related disturbances and fostering safer environments. Enhanced collaboration among various stakeholders may lead to significant improvements in public safety and community well-being in the long run.
