“Strengthening Families: The Key to Combating HIV/AIDS in Fiji”

The general secretary of the Fiji Council of Churches, Rev Simione Tugi, emphasized the crucial role of family in combating HIV/AIDS. He encouraged the public to seek testing at medical facilities, noting that stigma surrounding HIV often discourages early testing.

Tugi pointed out that many individuals feel uncomfortable visiting churches or hospitals due to societal opinions on HIV, with some facing rejection from family and friends. He argued that this mindset contradicts the essence of Christianity and urged the community to embrace acceptance.

He stressed the importance of caring for vulnerable individuals, stating that the church, community, and government have a responsibility to support those affected. Tugi called on the public to prioritize their health and get tested, framing the issue as a matter of life and death.

Additionally, he highlighted the need for parents to prioritize family time with their children, asserting that the quality of family relations will shape the future of Fijian society. He referenced biblical teachings, stating that when families disintegrate, society follows suit. Tugi observed a disconnection where parents and children often lead separate lives, leading to youths seeking validation and support from peers instead of their families.

He concluded by stressing the importance of a collective approach to address these challenges, recognizing that isolation is not a viable solution.
