Strengthening Child Protection: A Call to Action Against Abuse

Shairana Ali, the CEO of Save the Children Fiji, has emphasized the urgent need for improved protective measures, enhanced education for parents and caregivers, and greater support for children facing abuse or at risk of it. During the observance of Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Day, Ms. Ali pointed out worrying trends in child abuse statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

In 2023 alone, the ODPP identified over 200 reported cases of child sexual abuse and more than 300 instances of physical abuse or neglect. These statistics reflect not just numbers but the painful realities that individual children endure.

“We cannot be mere bystanders in response to this crisis,” Ms. Ali asserted. She highlighted the ongoing efforts to provide support and raise awareness within communities while advocating for stricter child protection laws. She firmly believes that every child deserves a chance to grow up free from harm, filled with hope.

Ali called for a united front to tackle child abuse, urging the participation of government agencies, law enforcement, non-government organizations, educators, community leaders, and families. She stressed the need to shift societal attitudes surrounding abuse, noting that fear, shame, and a misunderstanding of what constitutes abuse often prevent cases from being reported.

To effectively combat child abuse, she insists on the importance of educating communities about recognizing abuse and taking protective actions.

This call to action serves as a beacon of hope for the future, where collective efforts can create a safer environment for all children, ensuring their well-being and fostering a culture of reporting and support. By embracing education and community involvement, we can aspire to significantly reduce instances of abuse and neglect.
