Mark Brown, chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), called on the region’s Foreign Affairs Ministers, gathered in Suva, to avoid relying on the goodwill of others. During his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the growing geostrategic interests the region faces.
He emphasized the ongoing battle against the climate crisis, which intensifies annually, while also addressing new challenges such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime. Brown reiterated the importance of regional political solidarity, stating that when one member seeks assistance, the collective forum should be ready to respond.
Expressing his satisfaction with the progress being made, he indicated that the ministers’ discussions should center on strengthening shared priorities. “We can no longer rest on our laurels or depend on the goodwill of others,” he stated, stressing the need to be strategic and assertive in engaging with partners to support their goals.
Brown encouraged an atmosphere of frankness and honesty in the discussions, urging everyone to utilize the opportunity effectively. He took the time to express gratitude to the ministers for their collaboration as he approaches the conclusion of his chairmanship. Acknowledging the support he received during his tenure leading the PIF, he expressed that it has been an honor to serve in this capacity for the Forum members.
