When you come across an impromptu tin band (qiri kava) on the streets, consider making a small donation. Your contribution could help feed the hungry, provide clothing for those in need, or support a young person’s education. Not all street performances are simply for entertainment; some bands, like the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami, are dedicated to a greater cause.
Since the beginning of the year, this band has been active in Lami and Suva, sharing both joy and purpose through their musical performances. The band leader, Irame Ratulele, explains that their initiative serves to keep young people, particularly boys, away from crime and drugs. Many members are students, unemployed, or from disadvantaged backgrounds. On a good day, the band can collect up to $800 in donations.
The band’s performances primarily take place outside shopping centers and busy areas. Ratulele shared their financial model: 10 percent of the proceeds goes to their village church, a portion is reserved for the band itself, and the remainder is distributed among members to help support their families. Additionally, some funds are allocated for educational needs, including school fees and supplies for secondary and tertiary students.
The Washington Tin Band originates from a once-troubled area in Lami, yet it has been a transformative force in the community. “Every day, we encourage our young members to avoid substance abuse and engage in activities that uplift them,” Ratulele stated. Many of the senior members reflect on their own missed educational opportunities and highlight the importance of education to the younger generation. The band emphasizes the need for good jobs, believing that employment is key in reducing crime, as it allows individuals to provide for themselves legally rather than resorting to theft.
Last year, the Washington Tin Band’s commitment to positive change and their musical talent was recognized when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva.
This inspiring story reflects how the arts can play a vital role in community upliftment and personal development, proving that small actions like donating to street performers can create significant positive change. The Washington Tin Band serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging youth to pursue education and build a prosperous future for themselves.
