Not every street band is solely focused on entertainment; some, like the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami, perform with a purpose. Since New Year’s Day, the group has been actively touring Lami and Suva, spreading joy and contributing to the community through their musical talents.
According to band leader Irame Ratulele, this initiative helps keep young people, especially boys, away from crime and substance abuse. “Most of our members are students, unemployed, or come from poor families,” Ratulele shared. On a successful day, the band can garner up to $800 in donations.
Their performances often take place outside shopping centers and busy public spaces. Ratulele explained their financial model: “After collecting the donations, we allocate 10% to our village church, set aside some for the club, and distribute the remainder among members to support their families. We also reserve funds for educational expenses, including fees and supplies for both secondary and tertiary students.”
The band emerged from an area in Lami that was once plagued with issues, but their presence has positively impacted lives. “Every day, we encourage our young members to steer clear of substance abuse like glue sniffing and drugs,” Ratulele noted. Reflecting on their experiences, senior members stress the significance of education and urge the youth to strive for a brighter future through learning and skilled employment.
“Education is key to reducing crime—when young people have jobs, they can fulfill their needs without resorting to theft or other illegal activities,” Ratulele emphasized. The Washington Tin Band’s commitment to community upliftment was recognized last year when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva, highlighting their talent and dedication to positive change.
