Stormy Skies Delay Fiji’s Biggest 7s Tournament

Games at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, hosting the 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s, have been temporarily suspended due to adverse weather conditions characterized by lightning and heavy rain. Organizers prioritized player safety, deciding to postpone matches until the storm subsides.

This isn’t an unprecedented move for the Marist 7s, Fiji’s biggest 7s tournament, as safety protocols in the tournament’s Terms of Participation allow for game interruptions in the event of lightning or other hazardous conditions. The seventh match on Ground 1, featuring the Marist Women against the Namosi Highlanders, was halted after lightning was spotted in the vicinity.

The delay of the tournament echoes similar responses seen during past competitions when weather woes impacted match timings, reflecting the organizers’ commitment to ensuring the safety of players and officials alike.

Previous reports highlight the significance of the Marist 7s within the Fiji Bitter 7s series, showcasing over 95 anticipated teams this year, with a focus on inclusivity and the development of youth and women in rugby. Despite such interruptions, the tournament promises to unite the community in celebration of rugby and create lasting memories for all participants.

As spectators await the resumption of play, they can look forward to an event rich in competitive spirit and community engagement, capturing the essence of Fijian rugby despite the current weather challenges.
