The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for expected wet weather conditions over the coming 48 hours. Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima held a meeting earlier today with leaders from several essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority, to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are ready to assist communities that may be affected.

Despite heavy rain overnight, the FRA has reported that roads across the island remain clear and are currently accessible. Updated forecasts from the Fiji Meteorological Service have provided crucial information, allowing stakeholders to enhance their preparedness strategies.

In light of the potential for severe weather, the Ministry of Education has been instructed to ready schools as possible evacuation centers. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to prepare in advance and relocate to higher ground during the day to avoid any risks. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel at night to maintain safety and to reduce hazard levels for first responders. Those uncertain about evacuation centers or needing assistance should promptly contact local authorities or police stations.

Commissioner Rainima emphasized the need for farmers to move livestock to safer areas and take precautions to protect their livelihoods. He urged the community to prioritize safety, stay informed through weather advisories, and take proactive measures, particularly those living in vulnerable locations.

The Commissioner’s Office is committed to closely monitoring the situation and will continue providing timely updates as necessary.

For assistance, individuals can contact:
Commissioner Northern’s Office: 8811322 or 8811005
Commissioner Northern’s Direct Line: 9994261
Nearest Police Station: Contact your local station for emergencies.

In the face of challenging weather conditions, the community’s readiness and cooperation can make a significant difference. By staying informed and prioritizing safety, residents can navigate this situation with resilience and care.
