The Divisional Commissioner North is taking important measures to prepare for wet weather expected over the next 48 hours. Today, Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened a meeting with leaders from various essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority, Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and Land Transport Authority. The goal is to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are ready to assist communities in need.

Currently, the Fiji Roads Authority reports that roads across the island remain accessible, despite experiencing heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided detailed forecasts, allowing authorities to adapt their preparedness strategies accordingly.

In an effort to safeguard residents, the Ministry of Education has been notified to designate schools as possible evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying areas are strongly encouraged to prepare by relocating to higher ground before nightfall to reduce their risk. It is advised to limit movement during the night to enhance safety for both individuals and first responders. If community members are uncertain about evacuation centers or require assistance, they should promptly contact local authorities or the police.

Rainima has also warned farmers to ensure their livestock is moved to safer locations and to take measures to protect their livelihoods. He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safety during this weather event, urging everyone to listen to weather updates and take immediate action to prepare, particularly those living in vulnerable areas.

“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio and take early action to prepare,” he stated. “Your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”

The Commissioner’s Office is committed to closely monitoring the situation and providing timely updates as necessary.

This proactive approach demonstrates a shared commitment to community safety and preparedness, showing that when faced with challenges, planning and cooperation amongst services can significantly mitigate risk.

For assistance during this period, individuals are encouraged to utilize provided contact numbers for local authorities and police stations.
