The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging social media influencers and all drivers to stop dangerous driving behaviors, such as using mobile devices to record themselves while driving.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted that these reckless actions, often shared on popular platforms like Facebook and TikTok, not only violate the law but also present serious risks to road safety. He noted a concerning rise in such videos over recent months, which feature hazardous driving practices, including filming while behind the wheel.
Rokosawa emphasized that these videos may inadvertently promote the acceptance of reckless driving, which is a dangerous misconception. He stated, “Posting videos of reckless driving on social media is not only dangerous but deeply irresponsible. It sets a dangerous precedent for others.”
LTA is monitoring social media to identify these unsafe activities, and Rokosawa warned that the consequences of distracted driving are severe, increasing the likelihood of accidents and jeopardizing lives on the road. He stressed the seriousness of issues like speeding, drink-driving, and driver fatigue as major contributors to fatal accidents.
To combat this, the LTA will enhance its enforcement measures, particularly during the busy travel season, in response to recent alarming incidents. Enforcement personnel will be active in high-traffic areas, especially at bus and taxi stands, major roads, and known accident-prone spots, strictly enforcing speed limits and traffic rules.
“The priority is to ensure the safety of all road users. By ramping up our enforcement, we aim to foster a safer driving environment and lower the incidence of road accidents,” Rokosawa stated.
The public is encouraged to report reckless or unsafe driving behaviors through the LTA’s complaints channel by texting 582 or emailing help@lta.com.fj/complaints@lta.com.fj.
