The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging social media influencers and road users to stop engaging in unsafe driving practices, such as using mobile phones and other devices to capture videos while driving.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa remarked that these reckless behaviors, commonly displayed on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, are not only illegal but also represent a serious threat to road safety. He noted a concerning rise in videos featuring hazardous driving activities, including the use of electronic devices for filming while behind the wheel.
“These clips, which can attract thousands of views, inadvertently convey the misleading notion that such conduct is acceptable while driving, which is far from the truth,” Rokosawa stated. “Engaging in such behaviors is both illegal and irresponsible.”
He emphasized, “Posting videos of reckless driving is not only perilous but profoundly irresponsible. It sets a dangerous example for other drivers who may see these actions as permissible. We must make it clear that driving while distracted by mobile devices or other distractions is illegal and extremely risky.”
Rokosawa called for influencers and all drivers to promptly halt these actions and prioritize safety on the roads. He added that the authority’s enforcement unit is actively monitoring social media to identify and tackle these risky behaviors.
“The ramifications of such distractions can be severe. Using electronic devices while driving not only heightens the risk of accidents but also jeopardizes the lives of all road users,” he warned. “Speeding, reckless driving, driving under the influence, fatigue, poor steering control, and other distractive actions are significant factors contributing to fatal accidents. It is imperative for all drivers to understand the seriousness of these actions and take responsibility for road safety.”
The LTA plans to bolster its enforcement efforts, especially during peak travel periods, in response to recent incidents and the increasing frequency of dangerous driving behaviors.
The Acting CEO indicated that enforcement teams will be deployed to monitor high-traffic locations, including bus and taxi stands, major roadways, and known accident-prone areas.
He emphasized that speed limits and traffic regulations will be stringently enforced, focusing on detecting and averting reckless and impaired driving.
“Our main goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users. By ramping up our enforcement initiatives, we aim to cultivate a safer driving environment and reduce road accidents,” Rokosawa stated.
