In Levuka, the historic 199 steps of Mission Hill stand as a significant landmark in Fiji’s old capital. These coral and limestone steps, shaped by the elements over time, embody a rich history. During the mid-19th century, Levuka was a thriving hub, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers eager to leave their mark on the coastal town.
It was during this dynamic period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived in Levuka, dedicated to sharing their faith and providing education to the local communities of Ovalau Island. Recognizing the need for a space for worship and learning, they selected Mission Hill as the site for their activities, and the steps were reportedly constructed shortly after the mission’s establishment in 1858.
Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, recalls stories of the steps passed down from his family. He noted that the missionaries were resolute in their intent to create a path that mirrored their spiritual journey, leading to the construction of the staircase with 199 steps. He highlighted that the stairs were crafted from local materials and built by hand, showcasing the hard work and craftsmanship of the missionaries and locals during that era.
According to Mr. Tikomaisiga, the steps symbolize the arduous journey the missionaries undertook in their mission to bring the Gospel to the people. They provided access to the site of the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji.
As time passed, the 199 steps evolved into a symbol of Levuka’s unique history. Even after the capital was moved to Suva in 1882, the steps continued to remind residents of their Christian beginnings. Locals and visitors often ascend the steps not only to take in the breathtaking views of Levuka but also to connect with the town’s historical roots.
Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasized the cultural importance of the steps for the people of Levuka and Fiji as a whole, serving as a reminder of the town’s colonial past and its role in spreading the Gospel throughout Fiji and the Pacific.
Over the years, these steps have witnessed numerous significant events in Levuka’s history, with generations honoring their traditions by traversing them. As a cherished part of Levuka’s UNESCO World Heritage Site status, efforts are being made to preserve the steps alongside the remains of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel.
Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill continue to invite visitors to explore and reflect, functioning not only as a physical ascent but as a journey through history, with each step echoing the legacy of those who have walked before.
