Steps Through Time: Discovering Levuka’s Historic Mission Hill

In Levuka, the historic 199 steps of Mission Hill remain a significant landmark in Fiji’s old capital. Eroded by time, these coral and limestone steps tell a rich story that reflects the area’s historical significance.

In the mid-19th century, Levuka experienced a period of growth, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers who contributed to the community’s development. During this vibrant time, four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived to share their faith and provide education to the local populace on Ovalau Island.

Recognizing the need for a center for worship and learning, the missionaries designated Mission Hill for their activities. It is believed the steps were constructed shortly after the establishment of the mission in 1858.

Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, recalls stories about these renowned steps, which have been passed down through generations. “The missionaries were determined to create a path that resonated with their spiritual journey, so they built the staircase of 199 steps,” Tikomaisiga shared.

According to him, the steps were handcrafted using local materials to showcase the craftsmanship of both the missionaries and local residents. “These steps represented the arduous journey the missionaries undertook to bring the Gospel to the people. They were built to provide access to the site where the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji was established,” he explained.

The steps have endured as a symbol of Levuka’s unique history. Although the capital moved to Suva in 1882, the steps have remained a steadfast reminder of the early days of Christianity in the region. They attract both locals and tourists, who climb them not only for the breathtaking views but also to connect with the town’s past.

Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasized the cultural significance of the steps, noting, “They remind us of Levuka’s colonial history and the role it played in preaching the Gospel, not just in Fiji but throughout the Pacific.”

Throughout the years, the 199 steps have borne witness to pivotal moments in Levuka’s history. They serve as a bridge between the town’s colonial past and its contemporary identity. Preservation efforts are underway to maintain the steps as part of Levuka’s historical heritage, which contributes to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps are the remnants of the old Catholic mission and a historic chapel.

Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill stand as a revered landmark, inviting visitors to explore and reflect. Each step offers a glimpse into history, echoing the legacy of those who have walked before.
