Steps of Legacy: Discovering the History of Levuka’s 199 Steps

In Levuka, the 199 steps of Mission Hill continue to be a significant landmark in Fiji’s old capital. These coral and limestone steps, weathered by time, tell the story of a vibrant past.

During the mid-19th century, Levuka flourished with opportunities, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers who left a lasting impact on the coastal town. It was in this dynamic atmosphere that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived, motivated by their mission to share their faith and educate local communities on Ovalau Island. Recognizing the need for a place of worship and learning, they selected Mission Hill for their activities, and it is thought that the steps were built shortly after the mission’s establishment in 1858.

Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, shares stories about the steps passed down from his parents. “The missionaries were determined. They wanted a path that would resonate with their spiritual journey, so they built the staircase of 199 steps,” he explained. The steps, made from local materials and constructed by hand, demonstrate the craftsmanship of both missionaries and locals.

“My grandfather told me these steps were more than just a passageway; they represented the challenging journey the missionaries undertook to bring the Gospel to the people,” Tikomaisiga added, noting that the steps provided access to where the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji was founded.

Today, the 199 steps symbolize Levuka’s unique history. Even after the capital moved to Suva in 1882, the steps continued to serve as a reminder of the town’s early Christian days. Locals and visitors climb these steps not only to enjoy the stunning views of Levuka but also to connect with its rich history. Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasized their cultural significance, stating they remind the community of Levuka’s colonial past and its role in spreading the Gospel throughout Fiji and the Pacific.

The steps have endured countless significant events in Levuka’s history, with generations honoring the town’s roots by traversing them. Efforts to preserve the steps are underway as they are part of the town’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The remnants of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel are located nearby.

Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill remain a beloved landmark, inviting visitors to explore and reflect on their historical journey. They offer a physical ascent while echoing the legacy of those who walked before.
