Steps of Legacy: Discovering Levuka’s Historic 199 Steps

In Levuka, the historic 199 steps of Mission Hill continue to stand as a significant landmark in Fiji’s old capital. Enduring the effects of time and weather, these coral and limestone steps tell a rich story embedded in the region’s history.

In the mid-19th century, Levuka flourished with new opportunities, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers to this coastal town, all contributing to its development. It was during this vibrant period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived in Levuka, driven by their mission to share their faith and provide education to the local communities on Ovalau island.

Recognizing the need for a site dedicated to worship and education, the missionaries selected Mission Hill for their activities. The construction of the steps began shortly after the establishment of the mission in 1858.

Seventy-one-year-old Levuka resident, Luke Tikomaisiga, shares stories of the steps he inherited from his parents. According to Mr. Tikomaisiga, “The missionaries were determined to create a path that reflected their spiritual journey, leading to the building of the 199 steps.” He added that locals constructed the steps using local materials, showcasing their craftsmanship and dedication alongside the missionaries during that era.

“My grandfather told me that these steps represented more than just a passageway; they symbolized the challenging journey the missionaries undertook to spread the Gospel to the people,” he noted. The steps provided access to the Mission Hill site, where Fiji’s first Roman Catholic mission was established.

Over the years, the 199 steps have become a symbol of Levuka’s unique history. Despite the town’s transition after the capital moved to Suva in 1882, the steps have remained a steadfast reminder of early Christianity in the region. Locals and visitors now climb the steps not only to enjoy the stunning views of Levuka but also to connect with their past.

Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasizes the cultural significance of the steps: “They serve as a reminder of the town’s colonial past and its role in spreading the Gospel not just in Fiji, but throughout the Pacific.”

As time passes, the steps have witnessed numerous significant events in Levuka’s history. Generations have walked these steps to pay their respects and remember the town’s roots. Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill are recognized as a cherished landmark, inviting visitors to explore and reflect on the history they represent. Each step echoes the legacy of those who came before, offering a journey through time and heritage.

Efforts to preserve the steps as a part of Levuka’s historical heritage continue, aligning with the town’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next to the steps are remnants of the old Catholic mission and a historic chapel, further enriching the area’s cultural significance.
