Steps of History: Unveiling Levuka’s 199 Treasures

In Levuka, the 199 steps of Mission Hill remain a significant historical landmark in Fiji’s former capital. These coral and limestone steps are not only weathered by time but also represent a profound story of the town’s history.

In the mid-19th century, Levuka flourished as a hub of activity with missionaries, European traders, and settlers coming together in this coastal town, paving the way for future developments. It was during this dynamic period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived to spread their faith and educate the local population on Ovalau Island.

Recognizing the need for a space dedicated to worship and education, the missionaries selected Mission Hill for their activities, and it is believed the steps were constructed shortly after their mission began in 1858.

Seventy-one-year-old resident Luke Tikomaisiga shared that the missionaries were determined to create a path that reflected their spiritual journey, thus the staircase of 199 steps was born. He noted that the steps were built by hand using local materials, showcasing the craftsmanship and dedication of both the missionaries and the local community.

According to Tikomaisiga, the steps symbolize the challenging journey undertaken by missionaries to share the Gospel. They provided access to Mission Hill, where the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji was established.

As time went on, the 199 steps became emblematic of Levuka’s unique historical narrative. Following the capital’s relocation to Suva in 1882, the steps served as a reminder of the town’s early Christian days, with locals and visitors ascending them to enjoy breathtaking views while connecting with the past.

Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasized the cultural significance of the steps, noting that they reflect Levuka’s colonial history and the spread of Christianity throughout Fiji and the Pacific.

Throughout the years, the steps have borne witness to important events in Levuka’s history, serving as a place where generations have gathered to honor the town’s heritage. They stand as a bridge between Levuka’s colonial past and its modern-day allure.

Efforts are currently being made to preserve these steps as part of Levuka’s historical legacy, especially given the town’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps are the remains of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel.

Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill invite visitors to explore and reflect on the history they encapsulate, offering a connection to the past with each step.
