Recognizing the need for a space dedicated to worship and education, they selected Mission Hill as the central location for their endeavors. The construction of the steps is believed to have taken place shortly after the establishment of the mission in 1858.
Local resident Luke Tikomaisiga, aged 71, shares tales of the steps, recounting stories passed down from his ancestors. He emphasizes the missionaries’ determination in creating a path that mirrored their spiritual journey, leading to the staircase of 199 steps.
These steps were built with local materials and constructed by hand, showcasing the craftsmanship and dedication of both the missionaries and local communities at the time. Tikomaisiga recalls his grandfather describing them as more than merely a passageway; they symbolized the challenging journey the missionaries faced in their mission to bring the Gospel to the area.
