Stepfather Sentenced for Disturbing Crimes Against Stepdaughter

A man has been sentenced to 16 years and 10 months in prison by the High Court in Suva after being found guilty of raping his stepdaughter. The former primary school teacher, who was convicted on three counts of rape and one count each of indecent and sexual assault, was sentenced by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.

The court heard that between 2017 and 2018, the man had indecently and sexually assaulted the victim, who was 17 years old at the time, in their home. Although he initially pleaded guilty to five counts, he was found guilty after the State presented evidence from three witnesses, including the victim, during the trial.

In delivering the sentence on September 27, Justice Rajasinghe noted that the crimes had a significant emotional and psychological impact on the victim. He emphasized that the sexual exploitation of children within their homes has become a societal issue. The court found that the stepfather had committed the acts when the victim was alone and unable to seek help.

Despite providing for the girl’s needs as a father would, the man manipulated her vulnerability to fulfill his sexual desires. Even after the victim and her mother forgave him, he attempted further sexual abuse when opportunities arose.

The court did take into account his previously good character during his 30 years as a teacher, but ultimately imposed a non-parole period of 14 years and 10 months. Additionally, a permanent domestic violence restraining order has been placed against him, with conditions prohibiting molestation and contact. Breaching this order will result in prosecution under the Domestic Violence Act.
