Step Back in Time: Discovering Levuka’s Historic 199 Steps

In Levuka, the 199 steps of Mission Hill remain a significant landmark in Fiji’s former capital, telling a story shaped by history over many years. Crafted from a blend of coral and limestone, these steps reflect the town’s heritage, greatly influenced by the mid-19th century when Levuka thrived as a bustling hub for missionaries, European traders, and settlers.

It was during this vibrant period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived in Levuka with the aim of spreading their faith and educating the local communities on Ovalau Island. Recognizing the need for a dedicated place for worship and learning, they chose Mission Hill for their endeavors. The steps, believed to have been constructed shortly after the establishment of the mission in 1858, have since become a focal point of local history.

Local resident Luke Tikomaisiga, 71, shared stories about the steps, which have been passed down through generations. “The missionaries were determined to create a path that resonated with their spiritual journey, leading to the construction of the staircase of 199 steps,” he recalled. Made by hand from local materials, the steps display the craftsmanship and collective effort of the missionaries and locals of that time.

Tikomaisiga emphasized that these steps represented more than a mere pathway; they symbolized the challenging journey the missionaries faced in their mission to bring the Gospel to the people. Built to provide access to the site of the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji, the steps have gained cultural significance over time.

As the capital shifted to Suva in 1882, the steps remained a steadfast reminder of Levuka’s early days of Christianity. Both locals and visitors climb the steps, not only to enjoy panoramic views of the town but to connect with its rich history. Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti noted that the steps serve as a reminder of Levuka’s colonial past and its role in spreading the Gospel throughout the Pacific.

Over the years, the steps have witnessed important events in Levuka’s history, with generations paying tribute to the town’s roots. Today, preservation efforts continue for these steps, part of Levuka’s heritage as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps stand the remnants of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel.

The 199 steps of Mission Hill invite visitors to explore and reflect on their journey through history, serving as a testament to the legacy of those who walked these steps long before.
