In Levuka, Fiji, the iconic 199 steps of Mission Hill continue to be a focal point, symbolizing the town’s rich history. During this thriving era, four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived in Levuka, dedicated to spreading their faith and educating the local community on Ovalau island. They selected Mission Hill as the site for their activities, leading to the construction of the famous staircase shortly after establishing their mission in 1858.
Local resident Luke Tikomaisiga, who is 71 years old, shares stories passed down from his family about the determination of the missionaries. He explained that the staircase, built by hand from local materials, was not just a pathway but a representation of the challenging journey that the missionaries embarked on to spread the Gospel.
The steps were designed to lead to the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji. Tikomaisiga notes that these steps have witnessed generations of people ascending them, serving as a connection to the past and a spiritual journey filled with devotion.
As time progressed and the capital moved to Suva in 1882, the 199 steps stood firm as a reminder of Levuka’s early days of Christianity. Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasizes the significance of the steps, stating they underscore Levuka’s history and heritage. As part of efforts to preserve Levuka’s historical significance, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, initiatives are underway to maintain this landmark.
Adjacent to the steps lie the remains of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel. Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill not only serve as a beloved tourist attraction but also as a historical pathway that echoes the legacy of those who have come before, inviting all who visit Levuka to reflect on the town’s storied past.
