As the Diwali season draws near, consumers are encouraged to make informed choices and stay vigilant regarding their rights. The festival of lights, while festive, also calls for prudent spending to protect one’s hard-earned money.
Last year, the Consumer Council of Fiji recorded 163 complaints totaling over $15,000 during Diwali, reflecting various consumer issues. Complaints included the absence of displayed prices, discrepancies between listed prices and final charges, and the sale of expired food items. Reports also surfaced regarding contaminated products, with some items found to be infested with weevils.
A major concern during this time is price gouging, particularly for in-demand products. Recently, a notable increase in ghee prices was reported, alongside recurring complaints about overcharging on essential food items.
Consumers should also remain cautious regarding hair and makeup services, as complaints about poor-quality treatments have been noted. Additionally, online shopping has presented its own challenges, with several consumers experiencing non-delivery issues after making payments.
“Diwali is a joyous occasion, but it is essential for consumers to stay alert while shopping. We advise everyone to avoid hasty purchases and to thoroughly inspect items before concluding a transaction,” stated Council CEO Seema Shandil.
“Keeping receipts is crucial, as it aids in seeking resolution for any post-purchase problems.” She added that being aware of potential issues like pricing discrepancies, overcharging, and online shopping challenges can lead to a more pleasant and stress-free festive season. Caution is especially necessary during online shopping, where scams can be prevalent, prompting consumers to verify website credibility andproduct authenticity before making purchases.
