Stay Smart This Diwali: Protect Your Wallet and Know Your Rights!

As the Diwali season approaches, consumers are advised to make well-informed purchasing decisions and stay aware of their rights. The festive period, filled with excitement and generosity, also calls for individuals to safeguard their hard-earned money by ensuring that their spending is both judicious and meaningful.

Last year, the Consumer Council of Fiji recorded 163 complaints amounting to just over $15,000 during the Diwali festival, underscoring various consumer issues. These complaints encompassed concerns such as the absence of displayed prices, inconsistencies between advertised prices and charges at the register, and the sale of expired food items. Consumers also reported incidents of contaminated food products, with some being affected by weevil infestations.

Price gouging is among the most prevalent issues noted during the Diwali season, with certain high-demand products experiencing unjustified price hikes. A notable recent instance involved a sharp increase in ghee prices. Complaints regarding overpricing of essential food items that are regulated have also emerged as a common concern.

Additionally, consumers should be mindful of prevalent complaints related to hair and makeup services, including subpar quality in hair and beauty treatments. Online shopping has presented challenges too, with numerous consumers reporting non-delivery of clothing and other items after making payments.

“Diwali is a time for celebration and joy, but it is vital for consumers to stay alert while shopping. We encourage everyone to proceed with caution, avoid hasty purchases, and carefully examine their items before finalizing any transactions,” stated Council CEO Seema Shandil.

“Keeping receipts is crucial, as they serve as proof for seeking resolutions if any issues arise post-purchase.” Being aware of potential pitfalls—like discrepancies at the register, overpricing of essential items, and online shopping challenges—will contribute to a more enjoyable and stress-free festive experience. Shandil also cautioned that the risks of online shopping increase during the festive season, as scams may be more prevalent. Consumers should verify the credibility of websites and the authenticity of products before completing their transactions.
