“Stay Smart This Diwali: Guard Your Wallet Against Consumer Traps!”

As the Diwali festival approaches, consumers are encouraged to make informed shopping choices and be aware of their consumer rights. The festival, known for its excitement and generosity, also demands that individuals safeguard their hard-earned money by ensuring their purchases are both wise and purposeful.

Last year, the Consumer Council of Fiji received 163 complaints totaling over $15,000 during the Diwali season, which underscored various consumer grievances. Issues reported included the absence of displayed prices, inconsistencies between the prices advertised and those charged at checkout, as well as the sale of expired food items. Additionally, some consumers encountered contaminated food products, with reports of infestations by weevils.

The Council observed that one of the significant concerns during Diwali is price gouging, where in-demand products see unjustified price hikes. A recent instance highlighted this issue when ghee prices rose sharply a few weeks ago. Complaints about being overcharged for regulated basic food items have also been a recurring theme.

Consumers should also be mindful of common complaints regarding hair and beauty services, particularly regarding poor quality treatments. The challenges of online shopping have also surfaced, with several consumers reporting that they did not receive clothing or other items after making payments.

“Diwali is a time for joy and celebration, but it is essential for consumers to remain vigilant in their shopping habits. We urge everyone to be prudent, avoid hasty purchases, and carefully inspect their items before finalizing payments,” said Council CEO Seema Shandil.

“Keeping receipts is crucial as it aids in seeking recourse for any post-purchase issues.”

Shandil added that being aware of potential problems—such as pricing discrepancies at checkout, overcharging for regulated products, and online shopping challenges—will contribute to a more enjoyable and stress-free festive experience. She emphasized that online shopping carries its own risks, including the potential for scams during the festive period, and advised consumers to be cautious when making online purchases by verifying website credibility and product authenticity before final transactions.
