The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is advising citizens to remain watchful during Diwali as their teams are actively monitoring compliance with the FCCC Act 2010. Their focus is on preventing misleading promotions, inflated pricing, and other unethical practices by traders.
FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized that while Diwali is a season of joy and celebration, it is also a time when deceitful traders may attempt to exploit consumers. He encourages shoppers to exercise caution during the numerous sales and promotions prevalent in the festive period, reminding them to carefully read the terms and conditions of deals and to make informed purchasing decisions.
Abraham advises consumers to be skeptical of offers that appear overly attractive, as they may contain hidden disadvantages. To safeguard consumers, FCCC teams are conducting inspections across Fiji, having already carried out 78 checks aimed specifically at preventing price gouging and deceptive sales tactics, ensuring that everyone can celebrate the festival without worry.
He urges individuals to report any suspicious activities, such as inflated prices or misleading promotions, to the FCCC immediately.
