Stay Scam-Savvy: Fiji Launches National Awareness Week

Scammers are constantly updating their tactics to align with global trends. This statement came from Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, as he kicked off the inaugural National Scam Awareness Week.

“In our fast-paced digital era, it’s essential to acknowledge that scams have unfortunately become a part of our everyday lives,” Mr. Ali remarked. He outlined several scams that are currently prevalent in Fiji, including impersonation schemes, false job offers, and romance scams that are often fueled by misleading communications, particularly through social media platforms.

“The National Scam Awareness Week serves as an important platform to educate not only young adults but also future generations on how to identify and protect themselves from scams,” he emphasized. To increase outreach, the campaign will utilize various media channels, such as billboards and social media, to raise public awareness.

In related comments, Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out the lack of engagement from consumers during outreach initiatives. However, she noted that the demand for their services surged only after individuals had been scammed.

“Despite our numerous alerts regarding potential scams and guidance on identifying scammers, many consumers continue to be complacent,” Ms. Shandil stated. She expressed concern that even with extensive awareness campaigns both online and at local levels, people still disregard the advice provided.

This negligence often results in consumers seeking help only after they have fallen victim to scams. Last year, the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam had a significant impact, affecting 900 Fijians and leading to complaints totaling $1.7 million.

“The damage inflicted by such scams is just the tip of the iceberg,” Ms. Shandil added. On a global scale, online fraud has risen dramatically, with phishing emails and other fraudulent practices targeting individuals and businesses alike.

The Anti-Scam Taskforce has been established to improve coordination among various agencies, enhance awareness, and advocate for protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week. The taskforce’s goal is to boost public knowledge and implement collaborative educational campaigns, as well as to push for stricter laws and regulations.
