As the festive season approaches, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is raising alarms about the increase in structural fires. From January to September of this year, there were 152 reported incidents, resulting in damages estimated at $20.2 million.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane highlighted that electrical issues remain the leading cause of fires, followed by arson and unsupervised cooking, based on data collected over the past five years.
With Diwali on the horizon, Sowane urges the public to be vigilant when handling anything related to fire. He emphasized the importance of not leaving cooking unattended and using firecrackers responsibly to prevent accidents during the festivities.
Additionally, Sowane reassured the community that NFA’s water trucks are prepared to respond promptly to any fire emergencies that may arise. “If there’s a fire and the need arises, our fire trucks are ready to step in to help,” he stated.
In summary, the NFA’s message is clear: as celebrations commence, safety should be a top priority to ensure a joyous and fire-free festive season.
This article serves as a critical reminder for all community members to prioritize safety, especially during festive occasions when risks can increase. By taking simple precautions, we can all contribute to a safer environment this Diwali.
