In recent weeks, significant efforts towards reconciliation have been initiated by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, garnering attention from various sectors of society. Notable participants from previous conflicts have been engaged in discussions aimed at healing and moving forward, acknowledging the pain and loss experienced by many. Although revisiting these painful memories has proven challenging, there is a prevailing sense of forgiveness and a collective acceptance of the reconciliation process as a pathway towards healing for both the military and the nation.
However, amidst these positive developments, a critical issue has emerged concerning road safety. Tragically, recent incidents underscore the pressing need for heightened awareness and caution on the roads, especially as people return from the Diwali celebrations.
In a distressing accident that occurred early Sunday morning in Nasinu, a man in his 30s lost his life after a collision with another vehicle, also driven by a man of the same age. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on our roads. Similarly, just days prior, a fatal accident claimed the life of Salesh Prasad, who was returning home to celebrate the Diwali festival when his vehicle veered off the road in Karavi, Ba.
The current road death toll stands at 46, a notable decline from the 68 fatalities recorded during the same period last year. This downward trend emphasizes the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and employing safe driving practices. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana has reiterated the call for drivers to remain vigilant and responsible.
As we reflect on the value of reconciliation in fostering a united community, it is equally important to commit to safe driving practices. This includes adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones, refraining from drinking and driving, using turn signals, and ensuring to take breaks when feeling fatigued.
By prioritizing road safety and making informed choices while traveling, we can honor the lives affected by these tragedies and work towards creating a safer environment for all road users. Together, let’s pledge to stay alert and responsible on the roads, ensuring we arrive safely at our destinations.
In summary, while Fiji’s journey towards reconciliation is commendable and fosters hope for a brighter future, the parallel commitment to road safety is equally vital. By engaging in responsible driving practices, we not only protect ourselves but also honor the memories of those we’ve lost.
