Stable leadership within the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force is essential for national security, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. He emphasized the importance of public confidence in these positions, noting that it fosters a sense of security and alleviates feelings of uncertainty for both the community and institutions like the Fiji Police Force.
Kalouniwai stressed the necessity of having a Commissioner of Police in place, highlighting the need for someone capable of fulfilling the role. When questioned about whether a local or expatriate would be preferable for the position, he stated that the primary consideration should be the competency of the new commissioner.
Reflecting on history, he mentioned that military personnel have previously led the police force, with varying degrees of success, but added that he believes it is time for a shift in leadership. He indicated that the ideal candidate should be someone qualified and deserving within the police ranks to take charge.
In addressing the appointment of Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner, Kalouniwai refrained from making judgments about its correctness, suggesting that one must consider the context and availability of other candidates at the time of his appointment.
