Stable leadership within the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force is essential for the country’s security, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the leadership positions within these organizations are secure, which will help alleviate feelings of insecurity and uncertainty among the public, as well as within the police force itself.
Kalouniwai stressed the need for a Commissioner of Police to be appointed, pointing out that this stability is crucial for the effectiveness of the police. When asked whether he favored a local or expatriate for the role, he stated that the primary focus should be on the ability of the new commissioner to fulfill their duties effectively.
Reflecting on past practices, Kalouniwai noted that military personnel have previously led the police force, which was somewhat successful. However, he believes it is now time for someone deserving from within the police ranks to take on the leadership role.
In response to questions about the previous appointment of Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner, Kalouniwai refrained from criticizing that decision. He highlighted the need to consider the context in which the appointment was made, questioning whether there were other suitable candidates available at the time and what the motivations for the appointment were.
