Stability in Leadership: A Call for Change in Fiji’s Security Forces

It is essential for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force to maintain stable leadership to ensure the country’s security. Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of public confidence in the security of these leadership roles. He stated that a secure leadership structure contributes to the overall sense of safety for the citizens of Fiji and provides reassurance, not only for the public but also for organizations like the Fiji Police Force.

Kalouniwai highlighted the significance of having an appointed Commissioner of Police. When questioned about his preference for a local or expatriate in the role, he noted that the key factor is the ability of the new commissioner to fulfill the job requirements effectively. He also pointed out that while military personnel have previously led the police force, he believes it is time for someone from within the police ranks who is deserving of the position to take the lead.

Regarding the prior appointment of Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner, Kalouniwai refrained from labeling the decision as incorrect. He suggested that the context at the time of that appointment should be examined, including the availability of other candidates and the rationale behind selecting him for the role.
