The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a serious warning about the recent rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both reckless and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the chief executive officer of SRIF, emphasized that these fires cause significant harm not only to farmers but also to the entire sugarcane industry. He stated that deliberately igniting sugarcane fields is a criminal act that can lead to severe consequences.
“These fires are not just reckless; they are criminal acts that carry serious repercussions,” Dr. Kumar noted. He highlighted that SRIF has experienced considerable losses in important research data due to these incidents. This data, which takes months or even years to accumulate, is crucial for fostering evidence-based improvements in the sugarcane sector.
Dr. Kumar expressed concern that a single act of arson could destroy valuable research in a moment, hindering progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future. He urged the community to recognize the seriousness of the situation, explaining that arson threatens not only the economic stability of farmers but also the scientific research vital for the industry’s sustainability and growth.
The SRIF is encouraging the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, preserve essential research, and ensure the ongoing success of our industry,” he concluded.
